Sustainability at The Boathouse Apartments: Our Commitment to a Better Tomorrow

At The Boathouse Apartments, we believe every small action counts when it comes to protecting the beautiful place we call home—Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays. Sustainability isn’t a trend for us; it’s part of how we operate, care for our guests, and support our community.

Energy Efficiency

In 2024, we undertook a major lighting upgrade, replacing over 280 exterior and shared area lights with Clevertronics LED microwave sensor fittings. These smart lights dim when no movement is detected and instantly brighten when needed—dramatically reducing electricity usage while keeping our spaces safe and welcoming.

Reducing Single-Use Plastics

We’ve replaced over 9,500 single-use plastic items in guest bathrooms with refillable shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispensers, cutting down unnecessary waste without compromising quality or guest comfort.

Recycling & Waste Reduction

Our team has implemented a dedicated recycling program, cutting general waste output significantly. Clear signage and staff training ensure both guests and our team contribute to keeping recyclables out of landfill. We value the Containers for Change program which means we can give back to our local school and sporting communities with sponsorship.

💡 Smarter Systems for a Lighter Footprint

Through our participation in the EcoBiz coaching program and collaboration with the Healthy Heart Reef Program, we’ve measured our carbon footprint and introduced targeted initiatives to reduce it—such as optimising light schedules and reducing unnecessary resource usage.

Inclusive & Accessible Design

We’ve made practical upgrades to improve access for all guests, including pool ramps and entryway enhancements. We’re also proud to be QTIC certified for accessibility and regularly invest in staff training around disability awareness and inclusive service.

Ongoing Education & Engagement

Our weekly Toolbox Training sessions—delivered in English and Thai—help our diverse team stay aligned with sustainability practices, cultural understanding, and exceptional guest service. We also continue to support local community events and charitable causes through voucher donations and sponsorships.

Our Goal

We’re proud to be a Sustainable Tourism Accredited Business through Ecotourism Australia and the Australian Tourism Industry Council. But most of all, we’re committed to doing our part—for the environment, our community, and the guests who choose to stay with us.
