Cyclone Koji, the Wet Season & Why Airlie Beach Is Still a Great Time to Visit
If you’ve been following the weather lately, you may have seen news about Cyclone Koji and wondered what that means for holidaying in Airlie Beach. Like much of tropical North Queensland, we do experience a wet season — but that doesn’t mean the Whitsundays stop being beautiful, or that travel plans need to be put on hold.
The good news first: The Boathouse Apartments were not impacted by Cyclone Koji and we are operating business as usual. Our waterfront location on the Port of Airlie Marina remains the perfect base to enjoy everything the region has to offer.
What is the wet season really like?
The wet season in Airlie Beach typically brings warm temperatures, higher humidity, and short bursts of tropical rain, often followed by blue skies. It’s rarely days of constant rain — more often, showers pass through quickly, refreshing the landscape and cooling the air.
This is when the Whitsundays are at their most lush. The hills turn a vibrant green, waterfalls flow, and the region feels alive and tropical. Many visitors are surprised by how much sunshine still shines between showers.
Post-cyclone reassurance
Cyclones can sound alarming, but they are well monitored, and communities here are experienced and prepared. Even though it was our first cyclone experience personally, we were prepared and not alarmed by the experience. In fact we had several guests throughout the storm and some reported not hearing anything during the night.
Following Cyclone Koji, Airlie Beach has returned to normal operations, tours are running, restaurants are open, and visitors are enjoying the region as usual. The hype remains around the unfortunate boat owners who were negatively impacted when their vessels took on water or came from their mooring during the storm. We feel for those residents and visitors.
At The Boathouse Apartments:
There was no damage to our property
Guest stays continue uninterrupted
Our facilities, marina views, and location remain unchanged
We were fortunate to not even loose power throughout the storm.
A smart time to travel
The wet season — particularly February’s low season — is one of the best times to visit if you value space, flexibility, and value for money.
Benefits of travelling now include:
Lower nightly rates compared to peak periods
Fewer crowds around town, at the marina, and on tours
Greater availability for last-minute escapes
Warm ocean temperatures and relaxed holiday vibes
It’s also a great opportunity to enjoy the remainder of the school holidays without the peak-season rush.
Still plenty to enjoy
Even on the occasional rainy day, Airlie Beach delivers:
Waterfront dining and cafés just steps from your apartment
Covered walkways, marina strolls, and sheltered balcony views
Scenic drives, rainforest walks, and island tours that often run between weather windows
Cedar Creek Falls will definitely by flowing and is a wonderful escape for a fresh water dip with no stingers
Spacious, self-contained apartments perfect for relaxing indoors when you choose to slow down
Our advice?
Pack light, bring a flexible mindset, and embrace the tropics for what they are — warm, ever-changing, and undeniably beautiful.
If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to visit Airlie Beach, the wet season might just surprise you. With business operating as usual, great value on offer, and the Whitsundays at their greenest, it’s a wonderful time to book a stay at The Boathouse Apartments.
Why Australian Seniors Are Exploring Their Own Backyard—And Loving It
Why I’m Seeing More Seniors Ditch the Passport and Holiday at Home
After chatting with dozens of Boathouse guests, it’s clear—more and more over-60s are swapping long-haul flights for local luxury. And honestly? They’re loving it.
Hi, I’m Lea. I’ve worked in the travel and hospitality space for a few years now, and if there’s one thing I have noticed, that I love —it’s this: seniors aren’t settling by staying in Australia, they’re smartening up.
And I say that with complete admiration.
